Antiquing/Thrifting

Our local thrift store had several boxes of old glass ornaments. Since I have lots several already being
stored in the basement, decided to only buy this one box, mainly because of the red ornament with the gold crown.
This shoe gadget, used by cobblers, was bought at the local antique shop.
 My "O'de to Michelle Obama."
I wore the pin to work today and received a complement. All the pins Michelle wears costs in the hundreds of dollars. Mine was $3.00.
I thought I remembered a project using a whisk broom that I saw on Pinterest. I was wrong, the project was using a whisk scrub brush. If anyone has ideas on what I can do with this. No, sweeping involved thou.
A white feather wreath, it's beautiful and all the rage now. We bought it for 50 cents. I'm letting Amie have the wreath.
Please believe me, this is the first I've purchsed anything while antiquing & thrifting in several months. I've been concentrating on cleaning out. We showed up at the thrift store with a donation bag. Thankfully, more left the house than what was brought back in.

Hobnail Milk Glass

Every collection starts with one and this hobnail milk glass collection is no different. The first was also the most expensive, $5.00 darn. I won't be buying any more of this style, four is plenty. Although this is my favorite size for flowers.
I would buy a couple more of this style, if I came across.
This one is my favorite. I don't think I would find another like this one.
The cheapest you ask? 30 cents. This entire collection happened in about three weeks. There must be a lot of hobnail milk glass around nobody else wants.

I bought the chicken cage at an Antique Show last month. It reminded me of the lobster cages from the New England states. I bought it at the start of the sale and the dealer held it for me until I left, two hours later. He told me he could have sold it three times over within that time. I brought it home and tried to hide it from Mick, with NO success. I'm sure he wishes I wasn't at the sale so early. Anyway, we are going to look for four old iron wheels for the bottom, put glass on the top and use if for a coffee table. I may have to sell it once it's transformed or change out one of our two current tables.

Mick bought a sofa table for our family room. I then had to go buy more baskets, even thou I swore that my basket buying days had come to an end. The round one will go under the table filled with dried hydrangeas and the dark colored basket will go on the top.

I don't have a kitchen window sill to set tomato's on to ripen but I can fake it with fake tomato's.

A box of Birthday Candles from an antique store. I loved the graphics. I bet I paid ten times the original sale price.
I would need a couple more boxes to have enough for Mom's 75th birthday cake!!
Happy Birthday Mom.

Hats, hats for sale.

We called this one the "bee hive."
We think, this should be worn pinned to the back of the head.
The queen of England wears hats that look like the below.
Hot, hot pink.
Maybe a Jackie Kennedy hat?
Beautiful millinery flowers on this one.
I loved this one. To small for Amie's head thou.
We think this is why there were so many hats at the thrift store.
We did buy one. I wouldn't pay full price thou. The salesclerk called the owner & I got just what I wanted, $3.00 off the price. Well not what I wanted. It's Amie's hat. Last time I wore a hat was at the Kentucky Derby about 20 years ago. Can you guess which hat we bought?

Antiquing

Eric has been looking for a bookshelf for several years now. He wanted something cheap but sturdy. I finally came across one that I thought he would like. My cell phone came in handy, I sent him a photo of the below. It's made of cherry, it's very heavy & also sturdy. Was priced at $65 and I got for $55. It's going to be hard for me to give it up. I also saw this beauty. Was $32, marked half off, I paid $15. It's solid oak and was once attached to the top of a dresser. I love that bits of silver have started to come thru and also the bevel along the edge of the mirror.
I'm saving this for Amie. I just have no place of it but I thought it was a deal I couldn't pass up. I wonder if marking up then marking down half price sucked me in?

This was my view on our deck having my hot tea on Saturday & Sunday morning. The entire house smelled of lilacs all weekend.
My obsession with baskets continues out onto the deck.
The antique store owner mentioned how I'm always buying baskets. He once gave me a bushel basket. Last year I had a plant in that. It was not treated with marine varnish so it fell apart.
Donna will be happy with the black color on the wicker planter, I think. The lime green did not look good with the new deck colors.
I hope your weekend weather was as nice as ours was cause ours was perfect!

Bottlebrush Trees

I've started another of my way to many collections, bottlebrush trees. The below photo was taken off the Country Living web site. The trees were dipped in bleach to turn into beautiful shades of ivory. They are new trees.

Below is my measly collection. The large tree I paid $8 for at an antique store. To much but, I had to start my collection. The small one I paid 25 cents. I was at my Mom's favorite thrift store and Donna found it buried in a box of Christmas decorations. A friend of mine said Michael's sold them by the bag during the holiday season. Hopefully they will next year. I'll buy a bag & bleach. Although, I'll still search the antique & thrift stores for the old ones.

Have a GREAT weekend. I won't. I'm boxing, bagging, trashing and sorting again this weekend.

Tomato Pincushions

One day on my way home from work I stopped at a new Flea Market. I spotted these beauties as soon as I walked in. I immediately took them out of the case. Only $1.50 each. I love the tattered look of this one.I'll show you Martha.
I had tears in my eye's as I pulled out. I've been stressed & an emotional wreck lately. Who would of thought two tomato pin cushions would make me happy. I may have to get a larger jar for my collection.

Old Chalkboard

Remember when I went to Antiques in the Park? I bought this chalkboard for $10.00.
I love the letters & numbers.
This is my least favorite graphic.

I actually bought the chalkboard for the graphics.

An Old Crock

This is the crock I have on my kitchen counter that holds some of my utensils. Bonnie put in a request for me to find a similar one for her kitchen.
Ask & your wish is granted. I guess this is on it's way to her place in Arizona. A great deal at $13.

Maybe I need to plan a trip to see the crock in it's new home.

Antiques in the Park

Saturday we went to an antique sale. Mau got an old violin with all its pieces, except string. Kelsey is going to work on cleaning it up and putting it back together. She bargained down $10.00, it looked like it was serious bargaining.
These are the quilts still left from a year of selling. I didn't spend my day selling at the sale this year but, I heard they did do well. There are very few left.
Amie, look familiar? No, this is not your Butterfield. Must be his twin. They are selling for $3.00. How sad.
I even spotted a tomato pin cushion. It was a nice one also. Only one HUGE issue. It was a display item in the museum. Oh yeah, I did give some thought. Remember this photo. I have two edited versions for Wordless Wednesday. I want to have one verison printed onto a canvas.
I bought one item. I'll have to get some photos. I have NO idea what I'm going to do with my purchase. Mick will not be happy. It was just to good of a deal to pass up.

Antiquing

I've been watching this at my local antique shop for over two years.
The cost was $34.00. A month ago I asked the owner to negotiate a price & he offered $25.00. I told him I was thinking around $10.00. Since it wasn't his item, he couldn't agree. I asked him to speak with the owner, he didn't think the owner would agree. When I went to the shop a month later I asked if he spoke to the owner, he hadn't. But he said he was in a selling mood & agreed to $10.00. I was thrilled.
Can you guess what it is? Also, can you guess what I'm making out of it?

Antiquing

Mick found out about a barn sale over the 4th of July weekend. Since we were going to be in Lake Placid he made arrangements for us to go out on Friday night.
I was so excited when I found a tomato pin cushion. It is big, flat & made out of the most beautiful red velvet! What a find! I need about 5 more cushions now.
The sewing case is in perfect condition. Very unusual that I find something like this with the latch still attached.
The husband of the owner told her to throw out the drawer, it was the first thing I spotted. You can still see J. & P. Coats. I have no idea what it came out of & they didn't either. I put all my scrapbooking punches in the drawer & it's made my table much neater, "neat" as it picked up.
Just of few of my favorites from the sale. Bonnie, to bad you missed it! I thought of you when I was walking the barn.

You say tomato....

I say, I have a favor to ask.
In the March 2009 issue of Country Living there was an article on pincushions. They showed the below jar filled with red tomato pin cushions.
A jar filled with red tomato pincushions would look great on display in my kitchen. I currently posses 2, only 2. So, if you are at a garage sale, Salvation Army store, the Jewish Women's Thrift store in LA, etc, etc & see any for sale, please think of me. I will gladly pay you back.
