Antiquing

Eric has been looking for a bookshelf for several years now. He wanted something cheap but sturdy. I finally came across one that I thought he would like. My cell phone came in handy, I sent him a photo of the below. It's made of cherry, it's very heavy & also sturdy. Was priced at $65 and I got for $55. It's going to be hard for me to give it up. I also saw this beauty. Was $32, marked half off, I paid $15. It's solid oak and was once attached to the top of a dresser. I love that bits of silver have started to come thru and also the bevel along the edge of the mirror.
I'm saving this for Amie. I just have no place of it but I thought it was a deal I couldn't pass up. I wonder if marking up then marking down half price sucked me in?

Front Door

Mick supervised & I painted the front door. The color is from the new Martha Stewart paints.
I love the finish of the paint. It looks so good from the road. I already have the next color picked out. If you can guess the next color correctly, I'll come & paint your front door.
Or maybe you would rather not have me paint your door??

One house
Two house White house
Blue house
House one started out with 3 cubic yards of top soil, house two started out with 4 cubic yards of mulch. I can tell you, at house number one the wheel barrows & buckets were much heavier. Yes, the window box at house number one is supposed to have the paint chipping off, well it wasn't planned that way, but I love the shabby chic. Sorry Mau it's my blog, I get to be house number one!

Organic Green Gardening

I had an insect eat an entire field green plant. I knew it was a insect because a rabbit would have eaten the entire garden. There is also an inscet that likes my basil. The other herbs show no signs of being consumed.
At the Farmer's Market in Kingston, I told an organic farmer about my insect problem. She suggested I dust with garlic or spray garlic water onto the plants. So far the dusting seems to be working. There is NO way I would use any type of chemicals in my garden.

Fort Henry, Kingston, Ontario

Our tour of Fort Henry was very interesting. Mick asked, the "soldiers" are not from the Royal Military College but simply college students.

I'd like everything in this kitchen on display in my kitchen.

This was the only room in the fort that was guarded.

The cannons were never fired in battle. The fort was never attacked.
This is where the solider would look out to fire his gun. Again, they were never attacked so I guess no one ever had to shoot.
We had lunch at the fort. It was the best meal I had during my entire stay in Kingston.

Rice to Riches

Have you heard of Rice to Riches? Only rice pudding is sold in the store.
Well, I guess they sell coffees also.
Brittany & I shared a "see me" bowl. Amie didn't even like the look of it and wouldn't even try it.
We did not experiment with toppings.
I am a dessert loving person but,
IdidnotcareforRicetoRiches.
I'll take my homemade, made in the crock pot rice pudding any day. I'm going to make some for Brittany next time she visits me.

Flag Day

My flags for Flag Day.I went to a local cemetery on Memorial Day and took a bunch of flag photos. For some reason this photo spoke to me. I like how the setting sun lights the one flag. I knew when I took the photo that the star was turned away but I just didn't feel right disturbing anything. Also, I was taken by how many people were visiting the cemetery for Memorial Day.

Free People

When I was in New York City we went to Free People, a clothing boutique. The store had on display decorated bikes that will at some point be auctioned off.
Each bike had a theme. I definitely have a favorite? Do you?
If my old bike was fixed, I would want a wicker basket just like this one! I think I missed a photo of one or maybe two bikes. The manager sent an employee over and told me to stop taking photographs.

I am always amazed at the places I am told that I can't take photos. Yes, it happens quite often. I now go with "don't ask first."

Book Club

A Reliable Wife was our book for May. A third of the group really liked the book, a third disliked the book and one third thought is was OK. I think after reading Sarah's Key and loving that book, my expectations were to high for A Reliable Wife, I was in the OK third. I always enjoy reading books that are believable. The more into the book the more it seemed that the events were hard to believe. We all thought that this was a good book club book. It made for a night of great discussion. I host this month and I've been thinking about what to serve. I usually host in November, summer type snacks & dessert just haven't come to me. Maybe ice cream cake?

Spider Web

This one is for Kristen and Mickey. They are so afraid of spiders. I've never seen two so afraid of a bug as they are of spiders. Don't fear thou girls, there are NO spiders in this photo. I've always wanted to take a web photo. Spiders are bugs, aren't' they?

Kingston

We spent just over 24 hours in Kingston and stayed at a wonderful B&B.Kingston, Ontario. It's an old Victorian house.
We had a view of the court house out our window.
We could walk the entire city center & waterfront from the B&B.
The above is for Eric, he loves the Canadian Geese!

Retaining Wall

The retaining wall built alongside our driveway using railroad ties rotted away.

Mick said it would be a "day project." We didn't believe him. His projects never take a day.

There was more digging than we assumed.

He finished two courses & we didn't like how it looked. So back to the store for more stone. Thankfully my nephew Kevin was with us for the weekend & he has a truck.
140 stones and ONLY A DAY the wall was finished.
My contribution was planting the grass. Grow grass grow.

A bridge & butterflies.

Last week while driving home from the Adirondacks we stopped at a dirt pull off along the side of the road. While walking down the dirt path we came across about 60 yellow butterflies.
They started to fly away before I could get a picture of the entire group. We have no idea of the type or why they were all together in one area. It was the neatest thing to see.
Once I bent down to take a ground level photo they flew away.
Farther down the path was a suspension bridge.

I've driven by this pull off so many times and never knew all this was back there. I want to go back this fall.
